George "Dummy" Leitner (6/19/1872-2/20/1960) was from Parkton, Maryland. He pitched one game apiece for the Philadelphia Athletics and New York Giants in 1901, and for the Cleveland Blues (Indians) and Chicago White Sox in 1902. He had a longer career in the minors, I assume, and died in Baltimore. Place of interment: Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore.

I know about his brief stint in the majors, how he and fellow deaf pitcher William "Dummy" Deegan were released by John McGraw shortly after he took over the Giants. What I lack is information about what he did afterwards.

That's about all I know about him. There's nearly illegible photo posted in "Baseball Reference," which looks as though it's taken from Marc Okkonen's Baseball Memories, initially from a microfilm of a newspaper clipping. (See http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leitndu01.shtml.) I'd like to try to obtain a better photo (a REAL one), and, if possible, more information.

This query is also posted in the Surnames forum.

This is my great grandfather. Never lucky enough to know him. My dad said he worked for the Sun Newspapers. He and his wife were both deaf, one child was and one, my grandfather Clarence Wells Leitner, wasn't. That's about the entire sum of my knowledge. ANYTHING you can add will be greatly appreciated. Why are you looking for information on him?

In answer to your question (L. M. Leitner), I'd love to do a biographical sketch of him for DEAF LIFE's series, "Deaf People in History." He was evidently a good writer, judging by the pieces he contributed to the Maryland Bulletin (MSD's newsletter/magazine). I'm scouting for a photo of him as a player (for the "Dummy" Hoy biography I'm working on), also for DEAF LIFE's "Deaf Almanac" feature and our calendar project. I'm sure that he had some colorful adventures to share.
