I wish people would say morter if they mean mortar.

i just found out that a couple who are on a county cemetery board and have discovered a cemetery lost for over 50 years are working on preservation. one of their techniques is re-setting some of the fallen stones in cement. i was told they have about 60 stones to re-set and are still working on them.
i find this abhorrent that someone on a cemetery board is doing this. it is obvious they have done no research on preservation techniques. however, i'm almost 2,000 miles away, so all i can do is send an e-mail with links to web sites with information on what is proper. what else can i do? You can check out the state they are in and look at the state website and see if there is a Historical preservation board, or some sort of state department that handles these sort of things and notify them. Not sure if that will help..but it can't hurt.

Sorry for the hijack, but would you mind posting or sending me those links via PM? I'm working on an old cemetery (mostly mowing at this point) and could really use some good information. Thanks!

the cemetery in question is in kentucky. at first, i was told they were setting the old tombstones in cement. then i was told they were making concrete bases to set the tombstones on. then i found an online announcement about the re-dedication which states, "Two years ago volunteers began to dig and have been able to uncover nearly all the stones. Many have been reset in concrete and it looks like a cemetery again rather than a pasture." this is all the information i have, as correspondence regarding it has been minimal. in addition to the link mentioned by velia, i also would recommend: www.savinggraves.netwww.stonehugger.comwww.gravestonepreservation.info
