this is a long shot--- my greatgreatgrandmother, Minnie Howard Nelson (1861-1898)is buried somewhere in Alabama! I am told that she died in 1898 in Fort Payne, DeKalb County. I am also told that her grave is in a very old overgrown cemetery...but that is all I know--has anyone stumbled upon Minnie????

I have checked various online sites and cannot find her nor do i know if minnie was short for some other name in her case? at the time of her death -before records were kept in the state!- she was married to John Elkanah Nelson. he later moved back to michigan and remarried. he is buried in michigan; so no point looking for him there!

her daughter found her grave once but did not write down where it was.........

any help would be appreciated! i'm in ohio or i would go out sunday driving!

Minnie could be anything I agree. First I was thinking Minerva but who knows. Back in those days nicknames were often nothing close. My great aunt's name was Jessie and they called her Dolly. I mean??? So far I haven't seen anything else on Minnie. Good luck with your search.

Margo, quite often I have found Minnie to be short for Wilhemina. That said, she was listed as Minnie even in the 1870 census.

Perhaps at some you point you will find a formal record that will answer the question of her first name.

I'm curious, do you have any idea why they would have gone to Alabama?

according to my grandmother(who is still alive at 94!!!); she and her husband and kids went there for work (i don't know what he did)-minnie got sick-stomach trouble of some kind (gramma speculates cancer???)and was going to move home to Three Rivers(Michigan) to be with her mother, but died first.

i have tried looking for minerva and wilhemina and even just mary - i get a kick out of people's nicknames but i really wonder about minnie!!! she was very pretty too....

tonite i looked at every grave transciption on the USGenWeb site for Alabama....God bless all of the folks who have contributed...what i am fearing is that minnie's grave is one of those that cannot be read anymore or is unmarked...
my great gramma neva (minnie's daughter) found the grave before she died but i have no idea if she ever wrote anything down.....
