I think I may have found some clues for you & path you may want to explore.

I found a Frederick Conrad of the right age along with several sibling in the Poorhouses for Westchester County.

*Names of Children maintained by Westchester county with the Missionary Sisters of the
Order of St. Francis at Peekskill, during the past year:

Committed Name Town age Comments

30-Jul-1885 William Conrad White Plains 7
30-Jul-1885 Frederick Conrad White Plains 5
30-Jul-1885 Jacob Conrad White Plains 3
30-Jul-1885 Louise Conrad White Plains 4

In the 1880 census there is a William who is the son of a Jacob & Mary Conrad. He is listed as a Baker. It says he was born in NY, but I think that maybe wrong & nothing is listed for his parents POB.

1880 United States Federal Census about Jacob Conrad
Name: Jacob Conrad
Home in 1880: White Plains, Westchester, New York
Age: 23
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1857
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head)
Spouse's Name: Mary A. Conrad
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Baker
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Household Members:
Name Age
Jacob Conrad 23
Mary A. Conrad 20
William Conrad 1m

What's interesting is on the 1900 census you have for Frederick, there is a Jacob Conrad listed a little farther down the page. He is listed as widowed & a Baker. There is also a son Jacob listed, same as on the poorhouse records.

1900 United States Federal Census about Jacob Conrad Jr
Name: Jacob Conrad Jr
Home in 1900: White Plains, Westchester, New York
Age: 16
Birth Date: Jul 1883
Birthplace: New York
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relationship to head-of-house: Son
Father's name: Jacob Conrad
Father's Birthplace: Germany
Mother's Birthplace: New York
Marital Status: Single
Household Members:
Name Age
Jacob Conrad 45
Jacob Conrad Jr. 16
John Conrad 12
Mary Conrad 7
Etta Conrad 6

I noticed in the census records for Frederick, it varies on his father's POB. But in 1920 census he list his parents POB of birth as Germany & NY, same as in the census record above for for Jacob Jr.

I also found a tree at Ancestry for this Willaim & Mary Conrad. They don't have Frederick's name on it, but do have the other children (William, Louise & Jacob) listed on the Poorhouse records with Frederick.

William Jacob Conrad
1879 – 1910
Louise E Conrad
1881 – 1976
Jacob Conrad
1883 –
John Conrad
1888 – 1926
Mary Conrad
1890 – 1978
Etta Conrad
1894 –

Ancestry Tree

It's easy to miss children born after 1880 census, but married & out of the house before the 1900 census. This maybe why they don''t have Frederick listed, they didn't know about him.

A lot of this information looks very promising. Names, dates & location all seem to more or less match.

Just something to think about.

I found it on a historic newspaper site that is primarily for New York. I saw the birth announcement for one of her children and some other random articles.

The site is great, but quirky to search. I have gotten the best results using the boolean search. Create search strings by combining words and using the words "and" "or" and "not" to customize your search. Words typed in sequence mean you are searching for that exact phrase.

Happy hunting!

Hi Cowgirl,

I am trying to research Jacob Conrad and his wife Mary. The Jacob Conrad you are researching seems to be my great grandfather. My Dad told me his grandfather Jacob Conrad was a baker. My Dad, George Conrad was born in White Plains, NY as was his father, also George Conrad. I have my grandfather's death certificate which names his father as Jacob Conrad and his mother as Mary Grahan. My grandfather was in the NY Catholic Protectory in 1900 Census. Does any of this relate to your searches?
