Herbert N Manley http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=946551PVT, US MARINE CORPS Because he and his wife are in adjoining plots, the military info somehow was merged to her record instead of his. I did a bit of research to verify this because women didn't enlist in the USMC prior to WWII, and this seemed unlikely for Mrs. Manley. I found his info through Ancestry and the US Census for 1930. I found them by accident after looking up a different person and finding duplicate entries for Mrs. Manley in MD and NJ, both from the imported data. JanisCJ Janis send a Suggest A Correction on this. D

Janis send a SAC on this. D That sentence is somewhat misleading. Folks may think there were no women Marines before WWII. I think you must be speaking of the Womens Armed Services Integration Act (Pubic Law 625) If I may; Aug 13, 1918 Opha Mae Johnson was the first of 305 Women to be accepted for duty in the Marine Corps Reserve. July 30, 1919 orders were issued for separation of all women from the Marine Corps. Feb 1943 the Marine Corps women reserve was established. Before WWII ended over 23,000 officer and enlisted women reservists served in the Marines. After surrender of Japan the womens reserved was demobilized, but a number of them returned to service as regulars under the 1948 act. Note this is second typing due to white page of death.
